We met Sandra Peyreda at MacLoughlin High School, known as Mc-Hi, when we visited with the Heritage Club. Now, Sandra is working with us, helping us organize community events leading up to our play.
How old are you and how long have you lived in Milton?
I’m 17. I’ve live in Milton-Freewater since the day I was born. However, I have moved to several other places for a few months but this little town always seems to pull my family back.
Can you tell us the mission of the Heritage Club?
Heritage Club is here to serve and help bring out the Latino community.
What do you like best about being a part of it?
The experience I get with the people of Milton-Freewater! Also the community service! It’s an amazing feeling to know that you helped out.
What is your advice for future generations?
Know your self worth. You are more important than anyone else, put yourself first. Once you have accomplished that you can accomplish anything in the world; you just have to believe in yourself
Here is a poem that Sandra wrote in one of the writing/performance workshops we taught at Mac-Hi. Sandra is also in the drama class!
I COME FROM
by Sandra Pereyda
I come from
soup.
Warm star soup taking the brightness
of space upon itself
Silver pots
Black Stove
in a bowl
too hot, too spicy
Enjoy the dinner with your family
around the table
add some lime
I come from
listening to music in my room
the battery on my laptop is 38%
38% dead, 38% alive
relax.
Turn on your fairy lights
Light a candle
Read a good book.
Choose a book from your bookshelf.
I come from
“limpia la casa, hay un cochinero”
there is one shoe on the floor.
I come from
Hi.
Hello. I have to hurry, I’m off to class.
I come from
life.
Sometimes I can’t relax. Life is next
to me hitting me with a brick.
I come from
homework.
It’s in every wrinkle of my brain.
