I’m in front of my house in the woods. My one year old teddy bear jumped up into my arms and I took a quick selfie!
How did you end up in Milton?
I was living in Danville, VA because of a teaching job at the high school. To make ends meet, I painted houses after school and on weekends. I happened to be painting for a realtor in Danville who knew I was looking for a place where I could build an art studio and this property came available. I paint and make raku pottery out here.
You run a gallery in Milton. When did you open it? How has it grown?
After retiring from teaching I was at the Milton post office where I get my mail and noticed the empty building across the street. After looking at it and talking to the owner, I couldn’t get it out of my head. I kept visualizing an art gallery in there. I got two artist friends to share this vision and on a whim we did it: we opened in December of 2007, showing work by us and a handful of our friends. The two partners eventually moved away. The gallery now shows more than 50 NC/VA artists! You can visit us online at http://www.miltonstudioartgallery.com/.
